Thursday Tip...Addiction

Okay, someone has to stop me. I’m addicted … to Writer’s Digest Book Club.

I’m in their monthly book club. They sucked me in a few years ago with the offer of four free books. Boy, did they win out on that one.

Rarely a month goes by when I don’t order a book! This month I’m ordering four:

You Don’t Have to Be Famous: How to Write Your Life Story

Glimmer Train Guide to Writing Fiction

Page After Page

Writing to Change the World by Mary Pipher

Plus, I get two free books because I’ve bought so much in the past

What I Know: Letters to My Younger Self

13 Ways of Looking at the Novel: Jane Smiley

Somebody stop me!

Truthfully though I learn SO much from books on writing. I’ve rarely been disappointed by any writing book. I always come away with something I can apply to my work. Always.

This is very interesting to me because personally, I hate writing books! Isn't that funny? It must have something to do with learning styles. I feel pressured and doubtful when I read another person's idea of how to do things. The creative juices stop flowing.

Personal instruction is different, however. My return to active writing was the partly the result of an adult enrichment class in creative writing that I took several years ago at a local high school. I really bonded with the teacher and was inspired to start writing again after a twelve-year stalemate.

I do feel that my education was such that I have a pretty good idea of what good writing is. Or perhaps I'm just arrogant. That's a disturbing thought!

There's a post on my blog about my reaction to a writing book called "Not Enough Ideas."

Maybe writing tapes would be better for you. I know ACFW and Mt. Hermon sell tapes every year. I buy lots of those too, and I discover they are wise, wise people

Of course, I'm able to take bits and pieces and apply it for me. I know that I'm different and that's okay. Hey, I'm special :-) So are you!

Actually, you're right about the tapes, Tricia. I did get to listen to some tapes from a CWG conference a few years ago and those were very helpful too.

Have a great weekend!

I am covering my eyes. Covering my eyes! Don't tempt me with the book club... I have only narrowly escaped the siren call in the past...

I just realized I've been a member of WDBC for ten years. They roped me in, too, with their free book offer. My bookshelves are loaded with these instructional tomes. But any more I find I learn the best from reading other novels. But if I didn't have the foundation from these writing books, I might not feel that way.
