Thursday Tip -- Attitude is Everything

I don't know about you, but I almost NEVER finish everything on my daily t0-do list. There is almost "one more thing" that I hoped to squeeze in. If you're like me, here are some things to help you set yourself up for success.

1. Make a list. What are 5 things you'd like to accomplish today? (They don't have to be only writing related.)

2. Prioritize them, then write them down. Work on #1 before moving to #2.

3. Check them off as you complete them.

4. Celebrate! Instead of focusing on what you didn't finish, get excited over what you did.

Try this: YEAH, HURRAY I finished one of my goals!

Yes, there are a few more that didn't get done ... but remember God gave you today for a reason and you accomplished what He designed. You didn't surprise Him by what you did or didn't do. Either way you're right on track!

HURRAY! Look what I accomplished:
1. Read and highlighted my CWG lesson.
2. Read a chapter each of 3 different books.
3. Posted a blog on ShoutLife.
4. Edited and returned a meditation for The Upper Room
5. Wrote my grocery list and did my shopping. (hey, it is writing! TeeHee)
6. Bought myself a comfy chair to write from! YIPPEY!

Congratulations! That's terrific. Especially the comfy chair. I hope the CWG course is going well. My mother completed hers last year.

I still want to do at least an hour on my book today but since I have an early event to prepare food for and attend, I may not be able to write this morning.

My one and only goal, posted here for the world to see, is to get my story out of my head and onto the page. I am striving to organize my life so that the time that I have each day that is not absolutely claimed by something else can be spent writing.

Balancing is SO though! I don't know about you, but sometimes writing seems like a "break" from all the daily errands and stuff. Of course, if I never scheduled it in, it would never get done. There is always TONS to fill my time!

Regarding balance, I suppose I should explain that ever since college I have repressed my writing urge out of a sense of duty to my degree, my career and my family. Writing was something frivolous that I thought I could only do when all my other work was done, which of course it never was. It is only recently that I have felt that it was okay to allow two hours a day for nothing but writing, which feels like an incredible extravagance. I know it won't last long as I will soon be going back to school and starting a new career so I want to squeeze as much out of the next few months as I can!

I often see writing as a break from the routine--a diversion from the demanding, even though I love my routine too!

I agree, even the "work" of writing seems like a joy to me. And if we don't take the time we'll never have the time--even professional writers know that!

Hmmm... I guess it doesn't feel like a break because it's so much work and I'm so conscious of the time restriction. I'll think "I've only done three pages and I only have twenty minutes left!"
